Cet événement s’inscrit dans le cadre des célébrations du 50e anniversaire du drapeau franco-ontarien, un symbole fort de résilience, d’identité et d’héritage pour les francophones de la province.
La discussion portera sur la lutte historique pour les droits à l’éducation en français en Ontario, notamment le long combat pour la gestion des écoles francophones. Nous aborderons également l’évolution actuelle du système éducatif en français, en mettant en lumière les opportunités et les défis liés à une population étudiante de plus en plus diversifiée.
Cet événement bilingue (français et anglais) proposera des échanges enrichissants avec deux invités de marque — éducateurs, leaders communautaires et défenseurs de la francophonie — qui ont joué, et continuent de jouer, un rôle clé dans l’évolution de l’éducation en français en Ontario.
Guy Matte, CM
Guy Matte a consacré sa vie à la défense des droits des francophones en situation minoritaire au pays. Directeur général de la Fondation canadienne pour le dialogue des cultures et organisateur des Rendez-vous de la francophonie, il a fait son cheval de bataille de sujets tels que la protection la langue française, la dualité linguistique, le multiculturalisme ainsi que la diversité culturelle. Son travail aura contribué à faire de la province de l’Ontario l'une des plus inclusives et des plus respectueuses des droits des francophones.
Jhonel Morvan (Ph.D.)
Jhonel Morvan est actuellement surintendant de l'éducation au Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon. Avant d'occuper ce poste, il était chef de l’unité du curriculum au ministère de l'Éducation de l'Ontario où il a travaillé de 2009 à 2021. Il a plus de 25 ans d'expérience dans le domaine de l'éducation, en Ontario et à l'étranger, en tant qu'enseignant de mathématiques au secondaire, leader scolaire et leader systémique. Jhonel détient un doctorat en administration scolaire et ses recherches portent sur le leadership scolaire, l'inclusion, l'équité et la réussite en mathématiques des élèves noirs, racialisés et minoritaires. Malgré son emploi du temps chargé, Jhonel parvient toujours à enseigner la didactique de mathématiques au programme de formation l'enseignement, comme c'est actuellement le cas à l'Université de l'Ontario français (UOF). Il a aussi enseigné la didactique des mathématiques et le leadership scolaire à l’Université Wilfrid Laurier, à l’Université d’Ottawa et à l’Université du Prince Edward Island (UPEI). Membre actif du Groupe canadien d'étude en didactique des mathématiques depuis 2015, il siège au comité exécutif depuis trois ans.

This event is part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian Flag, a powerful symbol of resilience, identity, and legacy for Francophones across the province.
Our panel will explore the historic struggle for French-language education rights in Ontario, including the long-fought battle for French-language school governance. We will also examine the evolving landscape of French-language education today—highlighting both the opportunities and challenges presented by an increasingly diverse student population within the French-language school system.
This bilingual event (French and English) will feature engaging discussions and insightful exchanges with two distinguished guests—educators, community leaders, and advocates—who have played a pivotal role in shaping, and continuing to influence, the future of French-language education in Ontario.
Guy Matte, CM
Guy Matte has dedicated his life to defending the rights of Francophones living in minority settings across Canada. As Executive Director of the Canadian Foundation for Cross-Cultural Dialogue and organizer of the Rendez-vous de la Francophonie, he has championed causes such as the protection of the French language, linguistic duality, multiculturalism, and cultural diversity. His work has contributed to making the province of Ontario one of the most inclusive and respectful of Francophone rights.
Jhonel Morvan (Ph.D.)
Jhonel Morvan is currently Superintendent of Education at the Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon. Prior to this role, he was Manager of the French-language Curriculum Unit at the Ontario Ministry of Education, where he worked from 2009 to 2021. He has over 25 years of experience in education, both in Ontario and abroad, as a secondary mathematics teacher, school leader, and system leader. Jhonel holds a Ph.D. in school administration, and his research focuses on school leadership, inclusion, equity, and the success of Black, racialized, and minority students in mathematics. Despite his busy schedule, Jhonel continues to teach mathematics pedagogy in teacher education programs, currently at the Université de l’Ontario français (UOF). He has also taught mathematics pedagogy and school leadership at Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). An active member of the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group since 2015, he has served on its executive committee for the past three years.
