The Archives of Ontario and the Toronto Public Library, in collaboration with Mushkegowuk Council, the McMichael Canadian Art Gallery and Queen’s University Archives, would like to invite you to attend a viewing of an original copy of the James Bay Treaty (Treaty No. 9) at the Toronto Reference Library.

When: Monday, November 4 at 10 am and 3 pm (remarks begin at 10:00 a.m.)
Where: Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge St., main floor

In addition to viewing an original copy of Treaty #9, visitors will also have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about the history of the Treaty from Mushkegowuk leadership.
  • Read pages from the diary of Daniel MacMartin that outlines the oral promises made by the Treaty commissioners.
  • View an abbreviated version of the McMichael Gallery’s “People of the Watershed” exhibit.

We hope you can join this historic coming together in Toronto, during Treaties Awareness Week (November 3-9, 2024), to share stories and learn about Treaty No. 9 — a 1905 agreement that embodies the nation-to-nation relationship between Ojibway (Anishinaabe), Cree (including the Omushkegowuk) and other Indigenous Nations (Algonquin) and the Crown.

Please RSVP to Sean Smith (sean.smith2@ontario.ca) to attend these viewings.

We would like to acknowledge Tkaronto, a Mohawk word meaning “the place in the water where the trees are standing.”

The AMAPCEO office is on the traditional unceded territory of Haudenosaunee speaking nations, including the Wendat, Seneca and Mohawk. These nations have been here since time immemorial and were in more recent times joined by the Mississaugas of the Credit.
