One of the largest celebrations for Canada’s Chinese population, Asian Lunar New year is a celebration for many Chinese communities around the world. This year’s festivities begins on February 17 and runs until March 3.
What is Asian Lunar New Year about?
For more than 3,000 years, Lunar New Year was just what it sounds like—the beginning of a new year in the Chinese calendar. Celebrations occur to honour ancestors, homes or participate in parades and celebrate with feasts.
Each year of the Chinese lunar calendar is associated with one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, all of which have different characteristics. This year marks the beginning of the Year of the Horse which symbolizes adventure, vitality and momentum.
