Last week, AMAPCEO activists gathered for our annual Equity Forum. Representatives from our Equity Caucuses took the opportunity to network, learn more about the vital role AMAPCEO’s Equity Caucuses play in strengthening our union, engage with movements led by equity-denied communities, and participate in a workshop on collaborative leadership.

President Dave Bulmer and Vice President and Equity Committee Chair Cynthia Watt opened the forum with welcoming remarks. The morning continued with a deep-dive discussion of the vital role of AMAPCEO’s Equity Caucuses, tackling why the Caucuses exist, and how they can move beyond social gatherings to drive meaningful influence and impact in helping to build a stronger and more inclusive union.

In the afternoon, guest speaker Selam Debs led a session in which attendees explored how movements led by equity-denied communities are interconnected. Debs highlighted how collective empowerment is built through trust, mutual aid, collectivism and principled solidarity. Debs is a Black Ethiopian anti-racism coach, consultant & trainer, specializing in anti-Black racism, equity, inclusion and implicit bias awareness.

The Forum concluded with a workshop led by Stefan Hostetter, who focused on how successful leadership understands and harnesses the collective power of their entire membership. Hostetter is a trained facilitator and program design specialist, with over a decade of experience supporting socially aligned organizations with the Centre for Social Innovation and the Toronto Climate Action Network.

We would like to acknowledge Tkaronto, a Mohawk word meaning “the place in the water where the trees are standing.”

The AMAPCEO office is on the traditional unceded territory of Haudenosaunee speaking nations, including the Wendat, Seneca and Mohawk. These nations have been here since time immemorial and were in more recent times joined by the Mississaugas of the Credit.
