In the federal budget tabled earlier this week, the government announced that it is set to cut 16,000 federal public service jobs over three years. These proposed cuts would be in addition to the workforce adjustments already being implemented as part of the government’s budget refocusing exercise.
Our counterparts in the federal public service are being subject to cuts on top of cuts. The impact of this drastic decision will not only be felt by these hardworking professionals, but also by their families, their communities, and their local economies.
This news is especially concerning coming in a challenging national economy and in an era when our fractured relationship with the United States has resulted in on-and-off tariffs and the relocation of private sector work from Canada.
It seems clear that it is more important than ever to preserve and protect good, Canadian jobs. And public service jobs are good, Canadian jobs that do good for Canadians.
Everything from public health and food safety programs to childcare benefits and pensions to programs for new Canadians is made possible by hardworking public service professionals.
It is ironic that these cuts are being presented as part of the government’s “Canada Strong” budget. Public services are the foundation on which this country is built. And anyone who has ever built anything can tell you that you can’t increase the strength of something by chipping away at its foundation.
AMAPCEO stands with our counterparts in the federal public service and calls on the government to reverse its planned public service job cuts, to look elsewhere for its economic efficiencies, and to focus its attention on improving, not eroding the quality of services for all Canadians.
