AMAPCEO President Dave Bulmer issued the following statement today, following the release of the Ernst and Young line-by-line review of government spending:
“While there are always opportunities to streamline processes and to make our organizations more efficient, fundamentally, public services in Ontario are extremely lean. In fact, the Ontario government spends less, per capita, on public services, than any other jurisdiction in the country. And as denoted by the E&Y review itself – direct government services required to operate the civil service have flatlined for more than a decade and have in no way contributed to deficit growth. This is something that AMAPCEO has repeatedly shared with both the former and new government, along with our highlighting a few meaningful ways government can save significant amounts of money, e.g., by reducing or eliminating the use of consultants and a reliance on privatization and “P3” schemes.
Those of us who work in the public sector must work together to defend public services in this province. Devolving to a finger pointing exercise in the hope of defending ourselves is not what any of us in the public realm should be doing. AMAPCEO will not be taking that stance, and will instead continue to advocate for our own members, first and foremost, while maintaining our practice of supporting other unions and those who are unrepresented. As our most recent communications campaign maintains – public services operate best when we are all Working for Ontario."
