AMAPCEO is proud to be a supporter of two Broadbent Institute Awards – the Jack Layton Progress Prize and the Charles Taylor Prize for Excellence in Policy Research. These awards were handed out at the 2019 Broadbent Institute Progress Summit on March 25-26 in Ottawa.
Canada Without Poverty and its Executive Director Leilan Farha won this year’s Jack Layton Progress Prize for their human rights work on poverty-related issues. The Institute commended Canada Without Poverty for their leadership in bringing forward a Charter challenge to Canada’s charity law that ultimately declared the restrictions on the non-partisan political activities of charities to be a violation of the right to freedom of expression.
Akwasi Owusu-Bempah was awarded the Charles Taylor Prize for Excellence in Policy Research for his important work addressing the disparities in policing and marginalization surrounding cannabis use, especially for racialized people in Canada. Watch Dr. Owusu-Bempah’s recent TED Talk on the legalization on cannabis.
AMAPCEO congratulates both prize winners for their outstanding work!
