Update, June 26: A dedicated townhall is set to occur on Thursday, June 27 to discuss the experience of members, the closure of the building to the public, and plans for the days and months ahead.
Earlier this afternoon, the government announced that it would be closing the Ontario Science Centre, effective immediately, based on a recent series of engineering reports regarding the safety of the building for the public.
AMAPCEO has already been in direct contact with our members at the Ontario Science Centre, and is taking urgent action to protect their health, safety, and livelihoods.
Given the reason for the closure, AMAPCEO members’ health and safety in the workplace is the union’s immediate concern. We have demanded an emergency meeting with the Employer to discuss the safety of the Science Centre building for employees and are advocating for a 100% remote work option for employees, effective immediately, until those concerns are resolved.
AMAPCEO is also working to ensure job continuity and stability for members going forward by demanding a voice in ongoing discussions with the Employer about the impacts of this report, and by escalating our efforts to discuss the future of the Science Centre with the Employer in formal channels, such as the AMAPCEO-Ministry Employee Relations Committee.
“It is frankly shameful that successive governments have allowed this architectural award-winning building, the home of a beloved provincial institution, to deteriorate,” said President Dave Bulmer. “However, our focus now is ensuring the health and safety of our members, and advocating for the continuing role they will play in the Science Centre—from interim programming through to the opening of a new, permanent facility.”
AMAPCEO will continue to communicate directly with affected members on this issue as it develops. These members are also encouraged to contact Sangeeta Boondoo, AMAPCEO Labour Relations Specialist, at boondoo@amapceo.on.ca with any questions or if they have any experience or information to share.
