AMAPCEO's submission to the "Big, Bold Ideas" initiative

Queen's Park
Update

Wednesday, September 26, 2018

The Government of Ontario recently asked OPS employees for submissions to their “Big, Bold Ideas” challenge. AMAPCEO encouraged its members to share individual suggestions from their local workplaces and to remind the government about the importance of utilizing and investing in the professional public service.

On September 21, AMAPCEO submitted a report on behalf of our 14,000 members to provide advice to the government on how to improve service delivered to Ontarians, while saving public funds and ensuring that those funds are used efficiently and effectively.

Here is a summary of the key points submitted to the “Big, Bold Ideas” initiative:

  • Privatization of Highway Maintenance – “Procurement process did not adequately factor in contractors’ ability to deliver required services” and that “contractors were unable to meet contract requirement.” AMAPCEO’s recommendation is to the bring the provision of highway maintenance services back into the public service.
  • Community Benefits Agreements – The Community Benefits model is a feature of the 2017 Ontario Long Term Infrastructure Plan. Community Benefits Agreements are a formal mechanism to incorporate a public benefit into infrastructure investment, with a focus on community development and opportunities for historically disadvantage and equity seeking groups. AMAPCEO’s recommendation is to encourage the government to act boldly to follow through on the community benefits model.

We would like to acknowledge Tkaronto, a Mohawk word meaning “the place in the water where the trees are standing.”

The AMAPCEO office is on the traditional unceded territory of Haudenosaunee speaking nations, including the Wendat, Seneca and Mohawk. These nations have been here since time immemorial and were in more recent times joined by the Mississaugas of the Credit.
