With the end of the year fast approaching, AMAPCEO is reminding members in the Ontario Public Service (OPS) to be cognizant of their vacation credits.
Members have the right to automatically carry over one year’s worth of vacation credits into 2021. If you find yourself with more than one year’s carry over, your options are to reduce your credits to the allowable amount, or to seek special permission to go over your contractual allotment.
The OPS Employer has advised the union that, due to the pandemic, they are providing ministries with the direction to be “flexible” in considering employee requests for vacation carryover, but this is not a guarantee of approval, so be sure to submit these requests soon.
To submit a carryover request, you can find more information and a request form on the OPS Employer’s intranet site at https://intra.ontario.ca/ops/excess-vacation-credits.
Unless you are approved for a carry over, you will forfeit any vacation credits over and above one year’s worth on December 31, 2020. Check your credit balances now!
Members at the Ontario Arts Council may carry over eight days, although they may request Employer permission to carry over more “under exceptional circumstances.”
Members in other bargaining units may carryover one year’s worth of vacation.
Although other employers have not given notice of the same flexibility as the OPS Employer, if you would like to request a carry over, please contact a Workplace Representative.
