Conservative government re-elected; AMAPCEO stands firm on 124 and bargaining priorities

Last week, the Ontario Progressive Conservatives won a second majority government in the provincial election.

We do not yet know what the future of this government holds—there will likely be changes to several posts and portfolios in the coming weeks.

What we do know is that it was under the auspices of this same party’s previous government that the wage-capping legislation Bill 124 was introduced and enacted. We know that throughout the election period, the Conservatives refused to respond to requests on whether they would repeal their own unconstitutional legislation.

Fair and free collective bargaining is your constitutionally-protected right—and it works. AMAPCEO will continue to put pressure on this new Conservative government to repeal Bill 124. In the meantime, our effort as part of the coalition of ten unions to file a lawsuit to challenge Bill 124 is ongoing.

Earlier this spring, our Ontario Public Service (OPS) bargaining team announced that negotiations with the OPS Employer had broken down over the issue of equitable access to flexible work and were put on pause for the duration of the election.

Negotiations have not yet resumed and are unlikely to begin again for several weeks. We will keep all our members informed of the latest developments from their bargaining teams as they happen.

Leading up to the resumption of negotiations, we may also ask you to step up your visible support of your bargaining teams once again. Keep your eye on your inbox and on our website for more information in the weeks to come.

Rest assured that, regardless of this new government’s priorities or mandate, AMAPCEO will continue to advocate for our members best interests, both at the bargaining table and in the legislature.

Stronger together,

Dave Bulmer

We would like to acknowledge Tkaronto, a Mohawk word meaning “the place in the water where the trees are standing.”

The AMAPCEO office is on the traditional unceded territory of Haudenosaunee speaking nations, including the Wendat, Seneca and Mohawk. These nations have been here since time immemorial and were in more recent times joined by the Mississaugas of the Credit.
