This June marks the 32nd annual Seniors’ Month in Ontario. The month is an occasion to celebrate the contributions of seniors to our province and commit to building communities that encourage their well-being.
Over a decade ago, in 2004, AMAPCEO advocated for legislation to eliminate mandatory retirement at age 65. The passing of that legislation has given flexibility to employees whose careers have been interrupted, such as individuals—predominately women—who have taken parental leave or who have entered the workplace later in life. The legislation also recognized a healthy and productive aging population, and has helped to discourage ageist attitudes in the workplace.
Within AMAPCEO, 20.56% of our members are between the ages of 25-34, 57.50% are between the ages of 35-54 and 20.27% are over age 55.
We believe that the capacity of the public service is strengthened through the diversity of its employees, which includes a wide demographic of both younger members and those with more experience. This Seniors’ Month, AMAPCEO encourages all members to celebrate the value of the contributions of older workers in our OPS and BPS workplaces and to recognize that we can all make a positive difference—regardless of age.
We also want to take this occasion to salute our many retired members and invite all members who are about to retire to join the AMAPCEO Retirees’ Caucus – check out the Retiree Member application form.
