October marks Latin American Heritage Month, a time to highlight the many significant contributions of Latin American communities to the social, economic, political, and cultural fabric of Canada. Canadians of Latin American origin make up a large and growing community in Canada, enriching the national fabric with diverse and vibrant cultures, cuisine, music, dance, and more. Members of the Latin American community play an important role in Canada’s growth and prosperity.
In recognition of this important month, AMAPCEO Latinx Caucus Chair Maria Lopez Pevide and Vice-Chair Valeria Netto joined Cynthia Watt, AMAPCEO Vice-President and Equity Committee Chair on this edition of Equity at AMAPCEO Interview Series to discuss the significance of Latin American Heritage month and participating in the Latinx Caucus.
Maria Lopez Pevide has been involved in many activist roles since she joined AMAPCEO. She first became involved in the union six years ago, as an Alternate Delegate. Since then, Maria has been involved in many activist roles, including as a Health and Safety Representative and Delegate, as well as part of the Resolutions and Constitutional Committee.
Valeria Netto has been with the Ontario Public Service for over 19 years. Originally from Brazil, she is a passionate advocate for equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. Valeria believes in empowering Latinx members through learning, networking, and collaboration to foster a strong and inclusive community, and to inspire meaningful change.
Cynthia Watt: What can you tell us about Latin American Heritage Month in October? What are you looking forward to?
Maria Lopez Pevide: In 2024 we collaborated with HOLA Ops on their Latin American Heritage month event and we found it to be a great place to engage with other AMAPCEO members. We are looking forward to once again being involved in the event for 2025 to connect with more members.
CW: What message would you like to share with AMAPCEO members about the importance of Latin American Heritage Month?
MLP: I believe that Latin American Heritage Month is an opportunity for individuals of Latin American origin to lead with their authentic self and embrace their culture. We are a diverse group and the importance of acknowledging that in October is amazing.
Valeria Netto: Latin American Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember, celebrate, and educate future generations about the achievements and contributions of Latin American people in our province. I encourage AMAPCEO members to participate in our Latinx Caucus events, celebrate accomplishments, learn about the diverse cultures and histories, and recognize the ongoing impact of Latinx individuals in shaping a more vibrant and diverse community.
CW: Can you tell us about other Latinx Caucus events coming up in 2025 and 2026?
VN: We’re excited to offer learning and networking opportunities for Latinx Caucus members throughout the rest of 2025 and into2026 to focus on amplifying voices and building community. Upcoming initiatives include quarterly newsletters to members, collaborations with other districts and employee networks, community gatherings, and guest speakers to support career growth.
CW: Can you provide some insight into why it was important for you to continue to be actively involved with the Latinx Caucus, either in a leadership or non-leadership role?
MLP: It is important for me to be actively involved in the Latinx Caucus in any way as I show up with my authentic self in a leadership role. I want to embrace my culture and help create spaces for others to do the same.
VN: I am very grateful to serve as the Vice-Chair of the Latinx Caucus as it provides me with the opportunity to engage with members and the broader Latinx community, and to share common experiences, interests, challenges, and opportunities.
CW: Finally, what advice do you have for members who may be interested in joining the Latinx Caucus?
MLP: Get involved! Join our events, share your ideas, and volunteer with us to help strengthen our Latinx community. We are a diverse group of people from all over the world with our culture connecting us.
VN: Our Caucus is a welcoming space where you can connect with others, share your experiences, contribute to meaningful conversations, and inspire change. Your voice, your story and your ideas matter to us and we would love to hear from you!
