In August, AMAPCEO and OPSEU/SEFPO called on the OPS Employer to expand coverage of GLP-1 and semaglutide medications. The unions argued their respective drug plans should cover all GLP-1 uses prescribed by a patient’s physician and, as they become available, more affordable generic forms. Currently, only Ozempic is covered, and only for type 2 diabetes.
The Employer has now replied, and the answer is no.
In declining to expand GLP-1 coverage, the Employer said that changes to drug coverage are best addressed at the bargaining table.
This does not end the issue. We are:
- Pressing for expanded coverage. Together with OPSEU/SEFPO, we will continue to make the case to the Employer for greater access to these medications.
- Challenging denials. We are appealing multiple GLP-1 coverage denials to the independent third party at the Joint Benefits Committee.
- Looking ahead. Our continuing engagement with the Employer and the outcome of these appeals will help inform our priorities for the next round of bargaining.
We asked the Employer to expand coverage. Their answer was no. Our work continues.
