❗ The government has pledged to repeal Bill 28.
The Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees all Canadians the right to fair and free collective bargaining. Legally constraining public servants’ ability to negotiate freely is a violation of that right, as is invoking the notwithstanding clause for the sole purpose of imposing a contract.
It is wrong to wield legislation against workers simply exercising their right to bargain fair and reasonable agreements and to take job action when dissatisfied. Just as it was wrong to impose legislation (Bill 124) to arbitrarily enforce a cap on the compensation of more than one million public sector workers—AMAPCEO members included.
This government's repeated override of public sector workers’ rights sets a dangerous precedent and sends a clear message. It suggests a complete absence of respect for the people of this province who carry out its very mission, and for the laws of this country.
We urge the Government of Ontario, in the strongest possible terms, to reconsider its pre-emptive back-to-work legislation in favour of a return to good faith bargaining, and we stand with CUPE and its education sector members.
Take Action
AMAPCEO stands in solidarity with CUPE-OSBCU as they face draconian anti-worker legislation and prepare to go on strike on Friday.
CUPE-OSBCU education workers have been bargaining for a fair contract to improve their working conditions and Ontario's students' learning conditions.
- Education workers make only $39,000 per year, on average.
- 51% of them work a second job to make ends meet
- 91% report facing financial hardship
- 27% have already cut back on food
- 60% are laid off each summer
- They've already faced a real wage cut of 11% over the last 10 years due to provincial wage restraint legislation
What’s occurred this week is two steps beyond even Bill 124 and so its crucial at this time that we support one another across the public sector.
