Parents: seek flexibility, should you need it

President's Message

Tuesday, April 13, 2021

The Premier announced on Monday that schools across the province will not re-open for in-person learning following this week’s (rescheduled) break.

“I recognize the additional stress that home-based virtual learning can put on our members with learners,” AMAPCEO President Dave Bulmer said. “It’s one more thing to balance alongside their busy day jobs.”

For the most part, managers—with every employer—have been flexible, empathetic, and cooperative in helping AMAPCEO members better balance their work and life responsibilities, and especially when schools have been closed.

“Employers have been understanding, and we thank them for that,” Bulmer said. “But I want our members to know that their union is also here for them should they need to seek a formal arrangement to better balance their work and home obligations.”

The process begins with a conversation between you and your manager. If you and your manager cannot agree on a more flexible arrangement, or you require more flexibility than your employer can offer, it may be necessary seek a more formal accommodation. An AMAPCEO Workplace Representative can help with that, should you need it. Members can learn more on the AMAPCEO COVID-19 FAQ.

“This has been an incredibly difficult year, fraught with incredible upheaval and last-minute changes to our everyday lives,” Bulmer said. “I thank our members working both in and out of the workplace for their continued professionalism and dedication to public service, as well as our union activists for continuing to help fellow members.”

“Together, we’ll see it through.”

We would like to acknowledge Tkaronto, a Mohawk word meaning “the place in the water where the trees are standing.”

The AMAPCEO office is on the traditional unceded territory of Haudenosaunee speaking nations, including the Wendat, Seneca and Mohawk. These nations have been here since time immemorial and were in more recent times joined by the Mississaugas of the Credit.
