Everyone wants the food on their plates to be safe, affordable, and easily accessible.
For all those things to be possible, multiple levels of government need to work together to make sure food policies and programs work for producers, processors, and consumers.
When you’re selecting something at the grocery store, you’re thinking about taste, nutritional quality, and price. You probably don’t consider all the industry standards that apply to food, including food safety and environmental stewardship, inspections, international trade agreements, product labelling regulations, food fraud, and innovation in sustainable packaging. As a Senior Policy Advisor with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Wendy’s job is to think about these things for you. She and her colleagues balance all these factors when determining food policies and programs that would best support the growth of the sector, a sector important for both the food security and prosperity of Ontario.
Wendy translates policies and the reasons for them into plain language so that growers and processors can better understand what is being asked of them. She also works with industry to provide feedback to other levels of governments on their policies and programs so that they work better for the sector. She collaborates with her colleagues across the OPS to provide sound advice to ensure that policies do not result in unnecessary costs to the sector helping consumers keep more money in their pockets.
From factory to farm, whether selling or processing, wherever food is grown, produced, or made in Ontario, Wendy and her colleagues help producers and processors get their products safely to your dining room table.
