On October 18, 1929, Canada’s highest court of appeal decided to include women in the legal definition of “persons”—a victory that paved the way for women’s increased participation in public and political life.

Read what the AMAPCEO Women's Caucus Chair, Zahra Bolouk, and Vice-Chair, Sancgeetha Kulaseharan, have to say about National Person's Day:

“When reflecting on National Persons Day, it’s hard to know how to feel – should women be happy that we are now legally deemed “persons,” or should we be sad to consider that that term would not have applied to us even one hundred years ago?

I believe that on this day it is important to recognize the impact this case had for many women across Canada and the hard work of the women who moved the case forward. I also think National Persons Day presents an opportunity to reflect on the barriers women still face to having their humanity recognized.

We are privileged to live in Canada, but that does not mean we should simply sit back and enjoy our privileges. This day should serve as a reminder to us that until all women are considered “persons” in the fullest sense of the word, our job is not done yet! To ensure and safeguard the humanity of all women, everywhere, we need to commit ourselves to learning more, listening more, and caring more about the challenges women face here in Canada and globally.”

We would like to acknowledge Tkaronto, a Mohawk word meaning “the place in the water where the trees are standing.”

The AMAPCEO office is on the traditional unceded territory of Haudenosaunee speaking nations, including the Wendat, Seneca and Mohawk. These nations have been here since time immemorial and were in more recent times joined by the Mississaugas of the Credit.
