After hundreds of AMAPCEO members across the province stood together to send a message to the Ontario Public Service (OPS) Employer, the union took the next step in its legal proceedings against the Employer’s decision to withhold negotiated pay increases.
On pay day Thursday, members in workplaces across the province wore AMAPCEO navy blue to let management know that they were frustrated by the Employer’s decision to delay the April 1, 2024 wage increases—increases negotiated nearly 18 months prior.
The grievance, called an Association Dispute, was filed on Friday. In it, AMAPCEO alleges that the OPS Employer’s choice to withhold the negotiated wage increase violates the Collective Agreement.
The union is demanding the Employer immediately process these increases. It is also seeking interest and damages for the delay.
“If the Employer violates our Collective Agreement, we’re going to hold them to it,” said AMAPCEO President Dave Bulmer. “A contract is a contract. If you break it, we’re not going to stand for that.”
Nearly 6,500 people have signed the union’s petition calling on the Employer to immediately process the wage increases, and speed up processing the backpay that members are owed for the unconstitutional Bill 124.
AMAPCEO Leadership continues to push the OPS Employer to accelerate its timeline.
“This government (and by extension, the OPS Employer) has shown it won’t honour the constitution or its contractual obligations without being forced to do so in a court of law. Just as we did with Bill 124, Bill 28, and our National Day of Truth and Reconciliation legal challenges, we will see this through,” said Bulmer.
